Hi,

My cat is scared of one of my neighbour's cats (it keeps coming into my house!) and now is having some behavioural problems.

I'm going to address the other cat issue but what can I use to get rid of the cat urine smell, and deter him from doing in again? I know you can get a couple of pet products -feliway spray and Pheroma.

Has anyone used these or can recommend something else?

Thanks a lot.

The problem with using 'home made' cleaners is that they lack one fundamental part of what some store-bought cleaners are made of, and that's an enzymatic cleaning agent. Urine, feces and other body fluids are comprised of organic matter, and the only thing that breaks down organic matter are enzymatic cleaners specifically marketed for body fluids. Spices and citrus are sometimes effective deterrents because of their offensive smell, but they simply mask the traces of organic matter instead of breaking them down. I haven't ever had a cat urination problem in my house, but one of my dogs had a hard time with housebreaking. I have a very sensitive nose, and tried numerous products to effectively remove the distinct smell, but the one that worked best is called Nature's Miracle. The true testament to the effectiveness of the product, though, was that our cats no longer hesitated and hovered over the portions of the carpet the dog squatted over.

The Feliway should help if your cat is indeed urine marking because of the outdoor cat, but you're right in trying to deter the offending stray to really get to the root of the problem. I'm not sure if you're in a snowy climate, but if you're not, you should be able to put moth balls around the areas the outside cat frequents. The smell of the moth balls is a great way to keep unwanted pets out of the yard (just make sure your pets and/or children don't ingest them). Motion-detecting sprinklers are also an effective method of keeping bad kitties out of the yard, and also bothersome neighborhood children :)

As an aside, it's most likely that your cat is spraying around door(s) and/or window(s) if he's spurred on by the presence of another feline. When you pick up your cleaning product, use it around the interior and exterior of those openings, in case the outdoor cat is spraying outside in response to your cat's spraying inside.

Good luck with your kitty - I know this is a very frustrating problem. Please feel free to email me if I can help you out any other way!

Pepper or orange or lemon rind/juice in the areas that are problem should deter the cat from urinating there again

It just may take a while to get all the areas though.

Personally I have found little difference between this and the products available from the vets (although that may be due to the individual cat concerned of course...)

Well one natural way to get rid of the cat urine smell and stop them from doing it again is to use vinegar on the spot. The smell of the vinegar will linger for some time but after it goes away the cat will still smell the vinegar and not go there.

you shoud use biological washing powder, the enzymes in the powder degrade the urine and stops the smell.

Do not use bleach - it has ammonia in it and this is like urine to cats.

after using the washing powder use felliway or put his food in this area to ensure the cat associates the area with good things, not another cat.

Dont use citrus products it wont get rid of the urine smell and cats dont like citrus smells so it will make it even worse for poor tiddles!

i have never known the bought products to work either so dont waste your money, good old bold or ariel will work fine.

I have had animals all my life and honestly, the BEST and ONLY thing i will EVER use on stains and odor is "Nature's Miracle Stain & Odor Remover" it is sold in just about any pet store, I go to Petco...and its that red and white bottle. It doesnt look at high tech and cool as some of the other bottles but it is honestly the BEST thing you could buy! Good luck!

your naybors cat is a problem. does your naybor know kitty is terrorrizing your home?????if not--let naybor know. if nothing is done about the naybor terrorist, contain that cat next time it comers into your home and tsake it to the pound or call animal control.
if you do not wan t a war with the bad naybor who does not contain kitty, get a squirt gun. fill with vinegar. mark your territory all around the yard when you see kitty.squirt kitty, too, if you have to. vinegar will not hurt kitty, but should deter kitty from terroriing you and yor kitty. do not allow your kitty to go outdoors. kity is ssafer indoors.too many predators for kitty outdoors.
bissel makes a good lite weight carpet steamer.buy one or rent rug doctor. buy natures miracle. treat stinky areas with natures miracle. then steam clean carpet. then , as it dries, treat again with natures miracle.---even a cat in heat will not smell any more kitty scent. whew.
the main problem is naybors kitty. if naybor does not want to contain kitty and kitty comes into your home, then it is time to rid yorself of the pest. there are nuisance laws--i do not know the details in your state--if naybor persists in allowing kitty terrorist to continue in his ways, then there needs to be something more drastic done than just squirting kitty.......call humane society or animal control when you are able to catch kitty terrorist and let them deal with the laws.....? but those are only 2 ways to take care of th problem.......but do talk with naybor to see if naybor will contain kitty. if not-----"jail" time for kitty...........
i hope the squirt of vinegar and steam cleaning do the trick......
good luck.

The only product I know of on the market that works is Dumb Cat Anti-Marking Spray. You can get it at petco.com or drsfostersmith.com. Spray it on and leave it.

I had the same problem with my cat. I made up a solution of biological washing powder with a hint of surgical spirit and that seemed to get rid of the smell to them and me!
