Well, I haven't had a telemarketer call in years. I'm not on the Do Not Call list - I just switched to a certain phone service (internet based) that doesn't release my information. Definitely sign up for it, but in the meantime, all I can offer is this:
When I used to get their calls, I just let them run through their initial speech and then I always thanked them for calling, explained that I did not need their product or services - or for charities - that all donations in our family were made through our church - and then asked politely to be removed from their call list. Believe it or not, most times it worked. Not *all* telemarketers are evil. Many of them are simply good people trying to do their jobs and when you treat them with respect, you'd be surprised how well they treat you in return.
And for those guys who Just. Won't. Quit.? If you've tried to be polite and it hasn't worked, hang up. If you get a call back, hang up again. Then call the company they're selling for and ask to speak to a supervisor. Explain that their salesperson (or the person from the telemarketing company they've hired) is harassing you, explain that you said you weren't interested and asked to not be called again and that if you ever hear from them again, you *will* file a complaint with the BBB. Yes, it's a pretty empty threat, but most companies will respond to that.
I realize it's not as amusing as say, answering the phone and pretending to be a cop investigating a murder in the home and suddenly asking questions like, "Who are you, again? What exactly is your relationship with the deceased? Where were you at approximately 3:00 this morning?" - but, well, like I said, a lot of these people are *people* - people with families and bills and don't really deserve to be instantly treated poorly just because they're trying to earn a living.

Nothing. Look up the national do-not-call listings on the 'net - you can google it - and add your name and phone number. It will take about thirty days for all concerned telemarketers to get the message - but once they do, if they keep calling, you can file complaints, they will be fined and YOU will receive the money they have to pay!

Funny you should ask! First of all I get on line and there is a website that can prevent this www.donotcall.gov You can
register your phone at home and cell phone and soon this
will stop. They will stop calling in about 10 days or so.
By the way, I keep a whistle near the phone, if that helps
any.

I would let him know what the laws are concerning unsolicited calls and be sure you are on the do not call registry.
Once you tell a telemarketer not to call, they are to abide by your wishes. If they persist then (if you can prove) you can file a complaint with the FCC.

Tell them that you are busy and ask for their phone number and you will call them back tonight at their home. They will say that they are not allowed to do that, and then tell them, now you know how I feel, and slam down the phone. Go to the national Do Not Call registry and register your phone numbers, (home and cell) and it will take awhile, but it will quieten down after awhile. i have had about 5 calls in the last two years. Give it time to work. Also get an answering machine and screen your calls.

I use numerous lines on them.
One thing I tell is that the person they are calling is dead and in the closet and the body is starting to smell.
Sometimes, when I know its a telemarketer, I simply keep saying "hello hello... I know you are there... hello, what are you wearing ? is it sexy?" They generally hang up after that !!
Once in a while I scream "VERN..... VERN IS THAT YOU ? "DON'T MAKE ME GET THE HOSE" !!!
Sometimes I give them a lecture on bothering me and using up my valuable time since I only have 3 days to live.
Or I just say "your call is being traced & recorded now and I will be contacting authorities so charges can be brought up against you" They usually hang up after that too.

You Ask To be Put on the Do Not Call List.
That removes your name off most telemarketing list, it takes around 30 days to take effect though.
But please be nice to them, just remember they are just doing there jobs.

I signed up on the do not call list last March and after it took effect I have only had a coupel of calls, and I told them that I was on the list and they were not allowed to call. Before it went into effect I told them that I had signed up and they needed to take me off their list.

Ask to be placed on their do not call list.
Then go and register yourself at www.donotcall.gov - it's free, it takes two minutes or less to do, and is good for at least five years. If you continue to get calls, ask for the operator's name and company, and log the date and time of the call. Inform them that you're on the Do Not Call list, and if they don't remove your number from their database, you will report them. If they call back, head back over to donotcall.gov and report them. They will receive a pretty hefty fine for not keeping their database scrubbed.
I went several rounds with a timeshare company who called my CELL phone despite it being registered, and my informing them it was registered on the list. Eventually, I reported them, and haven't received a call since.
