I'll be moving to California in several months. I've been looking on Craigslist for Jeep Wranglers and it seems they are at least a couple thousand dollars more expensive. I was thinking about buying one here (Boston) and taking it out there to save some $$. But someone told me I'd have a lot of troubles getting it registered and passing emmission standards in California. Is this the case? Will I end up spending a lot to get a non-california car prepped for California emmission standards?

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9.htm will give you the information specific to registering your vehicle in CA from other states. Please note the disclaimer that says plainly you may NOT be able to do so.

As to the advice to keep your old license on it, it was free, and that's about what it's worth. Do so, and you are subject to your vehicle being impounded and some pretty hefty fines. If you're a resident of the state, you can't do that, and you are a resident if you live there more than 30 days, or are employed there.

You will be much better off to find and buy one already up to CA standards.

I brought my Jeep from Iowa to CA, and thank God it passed smogging. (It was old) Otherwise it would have cost more to fix it up to standards than it was worth. The reason prices are more expensive is because of all the costs the owners have had doing the every 2 year smog check and fixing things. They're also in better shape in general because there's no snow or salt on the roads.

Getting it registered is easy. You show them the smog certificate and your license and fill out a form and you're good to go.

After you get out of the DMV line....

All vehicles in the United States have Federal Emissions on them already the difference between Calif. & Federal is a simple adjustment to the fuel/air mixture due to the change in elevations.
Keep in mind that you will have to pay a higher tax on your vehicle registering it for the first time from another state. If you can afford to sell your vehicle and purchase one once you get to California, Check out auto auctions on a frequent basis. Most tow yards offer cars to auction off at a pretty good price you will just have to know what you are looking at because they are sold as is condition. An actual auto auction, not tow yard will allow you to inspect the vehicles closer than at a tow auction. OR keep your Ma. license and a trustworthy contact there that would keep registering your vehicle there.

The emissions test is tough to pass. I would wait until you get there. I would also consider buying a car that is certified for California. I would check with your dealership so they can find the right car for you.
