For a female it can happen if you have a diarrhea and it splashes up to the privates. It can also happen from improper wiping. It is more common for a woman to have a UTI than a man but men do get them. For a man sometimes E coli from the colon somehow gets to the urethra and causes infection which can spread to the bladder.

i don't know what the causes are but if you catch it early enough and drink a lot A LOT of cranberry juice it will go away. it works every time for me.
