Is it true that if a guy says 'you're beautiful' or 'you look nice' - with being asked or provoked about it first (example: "do you think I'm beautiful?") he is more apt to mean it?

Yes. Especially if you've never seen him before and he walks right up to you. Most men in our culture are neurotic fools completely under the thumb of fears, phobias and an almost delusional lack of self esteem (don't get cocky....women are far worse).
However, a small subset of men are strong enough to not be that way. Instead, they focus on being the best men we can be. This type of man is open, honest and extremely direct in all things, especially with you. If he sees you and likes you, he is going to make a beeline right for you and let you know in no uncertain terms. The first thing out of his mouth is likely to be you like nice, you're beautiful or I like you. Something along those lines. Basically, he is telling you that he is interested in you and why. And he really doesn't care one way or another if that pleases you. If you (foolishly) rebuff him, he will shrug and walk off. Ten minutes later, you will see him walking with some other girl much hotter than you.
Lost opportunity....ouch.

I would hope a man means it whether he is asked or not asked. There are some guys who may say it without being asked in order to gain points by mere compliments. I would say the majority mean it when they say it on any level.

good question, but i think for someone to actually use the word beautiful MAY have some emotion behind but who's to know really. What kind of guy is he? is he credible in other areas? Look for more than his statements(like actions) to know if he rally likes you and if he really thinks you are beautiful.

actually he is less apt to mean it becuase its been provoked. When a man tells you you are beautiful on his very own, that is so much more meaningful becuase he wanted to say it, not had to say it.

If your going to a bar and you want to score with the ladies,seek out the average looking girl not the best looking one ,buy them a drink and tell them that they are beautiful and flower them over and over again with compliments and your sure to get laid. As most women suffer from low self esteem and lack confidence when they are told by a complete stranger how attractive they (might appear to be) then they are going to seek out the positive reinfocement and look to please the person bestowing the compliments.This iks the same techniques used to trian a dog.

Depends on the guy...but most will just reply with what they think you want to hear. I think it is better to get compliments naturally by not asking or fishing for one by having to ask him if you are beautiful. Chances are he would;t be with you if he didn;t think you were beautiful...and as long as you love who you are inside and out...that is all that really matters!

it depends on the situation and the guy's character. for example... if hes a shy guy and he says that without being asked means he really mean it.
