I have a 2.5 yr old Jack Russell Terrier. Every so often, we'll be in our back yard & out of the blue, he wants inside. His tail will tuck in and he will start to tremble. He seems to be "sniffing the air" alot when this happens, at first. When I let him inside, he'll go lie in his crate or in a warm/cozy spot. This can last for an hr sometimes up to 2. Just keeping to himself. I can feel his muscles trembling, mostly in his back legs. I'm scared something is wrong with him. My parents keep saying "it's something outside because it only happens when he's outside". The first time this happened, his eye swelled up really bad, as if he was stung. I called the vet & they said to put a cold cloth there (which helped w/ the swelling). That was the first time it happened. He was trembling, tail down, etc. Every time after that, there is no visible swelling anywhere, just the shaking & cowaring. He will just be minding his own business & all of a sudden w/out warning, he starts doing it. HELP!

I have a 3yr.old female JRT and she does the same thing. I have noticed that sometimes after she has been running around or playing in the yard that her back legs will shake a little. Then there are times she will shake if she suspects that we are going somewhere and she isn't. This is her way of getting us to feel sorry for her and we take her along. (LOL). She too will take to her bed and stay there by herself, I sometimes think that this is her way of pouting if she isn't getting the attention that she wants right then and there. My brother-n-law is a Vet and he has told me that unless there is a something that you can see that has happened to them it's not to be alarmed by. I know that it's not seizures because Boo has had those as well and that is not what happens when a seizure occurs. All you can do is just monitor his activities when you see the shaking and note what might have taken place prior to the shaking to have caused this. Good Luck

well a lot of small dogs shake he could be cold small dogs get cold really fast because for one thing he has short fur and another because he so little and close to the ground even if its not cold outside to us to them is like 50 or 40 degrees another reason could b because hes scared because he heard a strange noise or he could be over excited most of the time metting new people or being in a new envirment or seeing something diff. could make them nervious or scared.

a neighbor's dog did that and it would sniff the air. but we found out that it only happened after the kids were home from school. another kid down the block shot it with a bb gun. and that was why the dog act like that. they found out when they took it to the vet and got a bb out of it's side. the owner went to those people and those people had to pay the vet bill. but it still made the dog upset when it went out. but the dog can tell if that kid is out or not. smart dog.

Dogs tremble for the same reasons humans do: they're cold, they're sick, they're afraid!

Give the little guy extra warmth and TLC.

I am no vet, but It could be a seizure. Maybe something outside triggers it?
