Like chipping and such.... I was wanting a tongue piercing, but then they said that it could chip/corrode your teeth, and I have beautiful teeth and I don't want to do that if it's going to mess up my teeth. Thanks for reading... and hopefully a knowledgable answer.

Having a Tongue piercing can damage your teeth in the long run. I personally have had my tongue pierced for a while now, but I have not experienced any damage, but it doesnt mean I never will. So, If your like me and willing to risk it, go ahead. But Im also very careful and I dont play with my tongue ring much at all and trust me you will get in the habit of playing with the barbell.

It didn't hurt me but I also have a high tolerance for pain and I had already gotten my nipples pierced before so i didnt think it would be wrose than that. When I got my tongue piercing it was a Monday and it was just like a pinch but I could hear it rip through my tongue. That day I ate ahead of time but I was hungry later so I had some chunky soup and I just ate on one side of my mouth slowly on that first day and once I figured out that trick I was eating anything I wanted every day afterwards, but everyone is different. Don't let the Internet or people freak you out. I also heal fast so my tongue was only swollen the second day. After that I sounded the exact same as I did before the piercing. Just make sure every 6 hours you take some medicine (Tylenol, Ibeprophen, Advil)

I had one for 4 yrs. I chipped 4 teeth 2 upper and 2 lower simply from eating and accidentally biting the metal ball while chewing. Also when I was sick and coughed it slammed against my front teeth. They make plastic balls that are more tooth friendly but I still don't trust it. After my dentist fixed my teeth I couldn't bear to put it back in even with a different ball. My hole is still there but it is no longer a 10 gage that I had it pierced with. It is more like an 18 gage now.
Hubby likes it for "special occasions" but I remove it afterward.

I've worked in dentistry all my life and have seen the damage caused by the tongue studs. Not just in my work but also from experience with my own 2 children who pierced their tongues without my knowledge several years ago. They both chipped front teeth caused by the studs that required crowns. After they spent a little over $1400.00 together, they no longer wear the studs, and it's not from my disapproval. Crowns aren't cheap, even though we have free dental due to my work, they had to pay for their crowns because they knew the damage these studs cause. Even the plastic one are known to cause tissue and enamel damage. You have more strength in your tongue than you realize. I've seen patients with the roots of their teeth exposed so bad that they needed grafting surgery to repair it. All from tissue damage caused by studs. So it's chipped teeth and tissue erosion to the point of surgery, crowns and sometimes so much trauma that the teeth need root canals. Is it really worth it? I'm glad my kids don't think so, they've both told me how much they regret having theirs and it's not just because of the money they spent. I hope I've enlightened you in this area and hopefully made you change your mind about getting one. Good luck.

Get one that will permanently have a short bar in it (so you can't stick it out and play with it) and with plastic balls on it (less harmful if you bite it by accident). If you have bad habits like myself you will, bite it, chew it and play with it in your mouth which will chip and wear down your teeth. If you don't play with it, and just leave it be, brush around it properly with your toothbrush you should have no problems with your teeth.

Edit - There is no pain, takes 2 seconds for it to go through, you will just have a swollen tongue for a few days. lol at the guy who said pain. I have also never heard of it damaging your nerves in your tongue. Where is your info coming from? The only dangerous piercings are certain places in your face etc not your tongue as far as I know.

Piercing is one thing I am against. I have heard about too many bad side effects that happen from piercing. Furthermore, it doesn't do anything good for your appearance and what people think of you. You are worried about your teeth, but what about an infectious lip or tongue, whatever.

If you have beautiful teeth don't take chances with metal clanging around in your mouth. First of all it's not going to enhance your looks by having a metal ball stuck through your tongue and only take away peoples attention from your great teeth. Don't be a slave to fashion fads and ruin your looks.

Check out this website. http://www.drhendry.ca/InfoAndLinks/TonguePiercing/Piercing.html According to this dental practice, tongue piercings can cause: chipped and broken front teeth, the necessity for gum surgery due to rubbing, cases of the jewelry actually coming loose and going down a lung or tearing the intestine, infection and death, blood loss, lingering pain, hepatitis and hiv. They cite each with actual cases (and often photos) of these actual problems.

Personally I think a tongue piercing is stupid except for the SG girls..but that just me..As far as the teeth go..If your eating, sleeping or talking habits create a condition that repeatedly bombards your teeth with this metal thing.yes it will over time damage them....

That is a good point however let me point out something else I think you should consider. I had a tooth filled once and when they gave me a shot to numb the aera, it felt as if he had sliced the side of my toung. I jumped and let him know that it hurt. After the numbness whent away strange things happened.
The left side of my toung stayed numb. I could taste salt in my mouth all the time. It was bad. I went back about a week later and told them what was going on and they said that happens sometimes. He had hid a nerve and it had caused the taste and numbness that lasted for about 45 days. He told me it could be permenant.
Piercing your toung could be permenantly damaging your taste buds and causing nerve damage.

I think they look god but after that happened to me....I won't do it.

Good luck.
