The apostle Paul dealt with this question in the book of Galations. There was debate at the time over whether someone who wanted to be a Christian had to first become a Jew. Paul said no. Gal. 5:6: "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love."

it became optional for adult gentile men...who had converted
the correct time for circumcision was 8 days old, and adult men were past this appointed time...there would have been too much pain and bleeding...at 8 days old, the baby has his highest levels of vitamin K, which is an anti-clotting agent in the blood. Also, at this age, it may only cause a momentary discomfort, but not the degree of pain, swelling and bleeding that adult men would experience.
.also..because the circumcision of the heart (spiritual concept-not physical) was now more important than the circumsion of the flesh.
however, out of respect for the covenant of circumcision, most christians do this on newborn males.

Wow Angel Purp, must have skipped over Genesis when she answered casue she missed that Abraham was an adult male when he and all the males where circumcised in accordance to the covenant - Freedom Fighter is right on. Jesus Christ is the new covenant! Keeping Kosher and circumcision and Baptism are all outward signs of the covenant but the ONLY thing that matters is accepting Jesus as your savior.

Many do, some dont. Circumcision is a sign of the OLD covenant. We are children of the NEW covenant. Baptism has really taken the place of circumcision to intiate us to the faith.

Some do some don't. The ones that don't are the same ones who claim that Jesus fulfilled the laws of the "old testament" and it's no longer necessary to practice those laws... all that's required is faith in Jesus to obtain salvation.

Many Christians DO chop up their baby's penis. Sexually abusive genital mutilation of baby boys is very common in the United States.
