I got my kitten about a month ago & he was perfect. He used his litterbox with no problem what so ever. Recently he has been peeing on my bed, almost daily now. I can't understand why. He'll occasionally use his litter box to pee, but it seems as soon as we confine him to my room he decides to use my bed instead. He's still young so we keep him in a room while we sleep or if we go out. He WAS fine until about a week ago. I've kept his litter clean & everything... Could it be because i took the frame out from under my bed & my matress is now laying on the floor? It's only about a 6 inch difference.. but he was fine all along. & he only seems to do it when locked away. Could it be a bordem thing? Please help...

I've tried "No Mark", it doesn't work for him.... & i've tried a vinegar solution... no success either...

I think he doesn't like being confined in the room. Let him outside, around the house, he must learn to be responsible and not damage things. It's better to learn at an early age too. Just explain to him at all times what is allowed and what isn't, by taking him away from where he does something naughty and putting him where he is allowed to play.

Urinating outside the litter pan is a big problem, particularly when it's somewhere as vital to the everyday as your bed. I'm not sure how old your kitten is, but it sounds like he's very young (less than 6 months), so odds are good that all he needs is a little re-direction back into the correct place to pee.

I think you're right to confine him to a room when you're not home - this might mean that if left to his own devices with free reign over an entire house, he'd be peeing in all sorts of fun places. But it seems that the entire room is still too much space for him to manage at this young age. In a perfect world, I'd recommend you to purchase a large wire kitten cage (like this - http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=663 ) to keep him isolated to an area forcing him to utilize a litter pan to go potty. If you can't afford one, as they are a bit pricey, you can pick up a play pen and secure a netted cover so he can't climb out. The idea is to retrain him to exclusively use litter to eliminate by removing access any other appealing surfaces (like your bed).

It could be that he's developing a dislike for the type of litter or type of litter box as he gets older. Cats generally like litter comprised of fine granules (think clumping litters), and I've found that cats who are picky don't care for hooded litter pans. Some cats are particularly sensitive to smells, and the hood traps odors. Also, tall or overweight cats find it difficult to maneuver and become comfortable as the hood can restrict their movement. You may want to try swapping out a litter or a box to see if it helps. However, only make one switch at a time (old kind of litter in new pan, new kind of litter in old pan) so that you know what's working and what's not. Too many changes may disorient a kitten and make the problem worse.

Hopefully this wasn't more than you were anticipating in an answer! I hope this helps you out some, as this is a very frustrating problem. You're right to nip it in the bud now, because the longer he pees where he ought not pee, the harder it can be to retrain him in the long run. Feel free to email me if you need anything else!

Your kitten has scent confusion. It smells the scent of urine on the mattress and is confused. The only product I know of that removes the scent is Dumb Cat available on petco.com and drsfostersmith.com. Spray it on the mattress where the urine is and leave it. Make certain you soak it into the mattress where the kitten has pee'd. It can take a while to get rid of all the urine, but it works.
