why do kittens want to get into your face when you are laying down

Your kitten sounds cute.
There are a couple of things I can think of.
If your kitten is very young, he needs to get close to you to see you properly. Just like human babies, they can't see very far to start with.
Kittens like to find out what things smell like. Kittens & cats will often sniff noses or rub heads to exchange scent. It helps them to bond as a group.

It's not only kittens that do this.
We have four adult cats and one of them follows me everywhere I go, if I sit down she's sitting in my lap if I lay down she lays on my chest.
The kitten is showing affection, or it just feels safe with you and it feels comforted by being near you.

kittens are curious, your face may smell like food, or just look like a warm place to sleep. but be glad... you can be sure the kittens feel safe with you . you could be like their new mama kitty. lol

I think it's security. Both my recent kittens did this. They would curl up under my neck or sit on my head.

They are probably just looking to get your attention and play with you. Another reason is that when you are lying down you are on their level. They can explore you more easily. (It's the only time they can look your face over.) Just babies being babies.

Because they are curious. And faces are interesting. They make sounds and air comes out of them and eyes blink.

They stay clost to their mothers long after they wean and it is comforting to them to get close to you.
