i have a electric glass cooking top (maytag). some cook gunk has built up around the burner. i can't find my books that came with the range. what can i use to clean off the gunk and not damage the glass? thanks in advance for any help

Here's what I found:
Ceramic glass cooktops should be cleaned with a paste of baking soda and water or the cooktop cleaning creme packaged with the appliance. Other glass or abrasive cleansers are not recommended.

I have a glass cooktop also. In the manual for mine, it said to clean off hard, baked on food by first trying to get it off with a non abrasive cleanser (like Softscrub). If that doesn't work, very very carefully scrape it off with a razor blade scraper. I don't particularly like using a razor blade scraper on my stove so I always go with the Softscrub first. I use Barkeepers Friend. Its near the Comet cleaners.
