I'm an active duty Air Force officer and a liberal Democrat. (Hopefully, that in itself may help dispel some of your stereotypes about liberals.)
From what I've seen, the radical left of the Vietnam era no longer exists for the most part. The typical anti-war protestor of today is much more mainstream. After all, 2/3 of Americans say they want our soldiers out of Iraq by the end of 2007. The common theme that you will hear from 99% of the anti-war protestors is that they support the troops but oppose the policy that is unnecessarily putting them in harms way. Believe it or not, a lot of people who protest this war do it BECAUSE they care deeply about the troops and don't want to see any more brave Americans die supporting a foolish policy that has been mismanaged from the start.
There are always a few crazy extremists still running around, and some of those people will likely do some stupid, stupid things, like spitting on a soldier to show their contempt for the war. But, those people are a tiny, tiny minority, and the vast majority of liberals condemn their actions just as strongly as conservatives do. Unfortunately, it's all to easy for people to point at a handful of fringe idiots and use them to stereotype an entire group of people whose motivations they don't understand.

There are definite parallels between the Iraq war and the Viet Nam war. The left wouldn't allow us to win the Nam war, or even enforce the peace treaty, and now they are bound and determined to not allow us to win this war. But there are differences, and they are dangerous. We could be fairly sure that the Cong weren't going to chase us back to our own country and start killing people here. This is not the case with these Islamo-fascists. We didn't have a huge NV population, nor were we allowing more in every day under student visas or sneaking across a porous border. Bush is right, kill them where they live, or they will kill us where we live. I'd just like to add something directed to Viet Nam vets. You didn't lose that war. By any subjective analysis (body counts, etc.) you won. It was the loony left (like John Kerry), aided and abetted by kooky politicians who lost that war. But think of it this way. In the long run, you still won. The Viet Nam war was really only a battle in the war against communist aggression, and we know how that one turned out.

I don't know what you mean by "starting up again"? Are you referring to them protesting the war in Iraq? I am pretty sure they have been doing it all along. I think you are very mistaken in their support. As a soldier who is currently in Iraq for the 2nd time, I have had more support from people who disapproved of the war that people supporting it. The majority of the letters that random strangers write express support for the troops and disapproval with the war. When I am home, I receive nothing but support from everybody, and I am from the very liberal part of Northern California. Sir, I think you need to check your facts; it it the President and his fake war that people don't support, not the troops.

I don't think that will happen again. Even Liberals know that was a bad thing.
And I had better never see that happen.
