If you have your tax return prepared for free and they do it correctly that would be the least expensive means. Therefore you potentially would get more because you are not paying a fee to have the return prepared. The places that prepare taxes for free are doing paper returns and the turnaround time is 6 to 7 weeks where the professional places offer means to get your return in as little as 1 day or so, but for a fee. If you can wait you can save a couple hundred dollars by going to the free places.

It doesn't matter where your taxes are prepared. You should have the same tax liability and therefore the same refund or tax due regardless of who prepares your return. This is particularly true for a typical wage earner whose only income is reported on Form W2.

It is against the law for tax preparers to claim that they can get you a larger refund (or in fact any refund at all) than some other method of preparing your taxes. The advertising claims that they make fall just short of the legal limits of the law.

Note: The IRS examined a group of VITA returns last year and found mistakes in two-thirds of the returns examined.

VITA volunteers perform a good service but, for whatever reason, they don't tend to keep up with the changing tax laws.

Programs such as TaxCut and TurboTax are very good but they are not "idiot proof". You do need to know what you are doing.

The free places do electronic filing, and they are free, so if you qualify for the free filing that is the most beneficial to you.
They are volunteers who are trained by the IRS and some of the volunteers are IRS employees too. You can't go wrong with that option.
