Not knowing the ins and out of the illness or how close the relatives are, if anything she would have to go into a special residential care home to the type of care needed, not a hospital if she needed 24 hr care. Hospitals don't keep long term patients,(unless they need special meds and equipment) they usually have social services help the patient and family find a special care home who can give those needs.
As she would not be able to get government help with costs etc, she or her family would have to pay for her care. Even British Citizens have to pay for the same care.
If she isn't a British Citizen, she would have to go through normal immigration rules anyway.
If she is that ill and needs 24 hr care, I am not sure whether an airline would let her fly.
If she just flies to UK with no paperwork, immigration might sense what is happening and could make her return.
There are lots of people who do go to Uk and try and get free medical help, but it is now getting tougher on this.
A difficult situation I know, especially if I think it is one of my family relatives.
Best thing is that the family get together discuss the options here and find out first whether she can go to the Uk legally before making arrangements. If she is allowed to to to UK, then find out from her doctor her needs etc, and then ring around some residential care homes to find out costs, what they offer and availability. UK social services are also a good place to find information.
Good luck

She can have all the hospital care she needs here but if she has no health insurance she will get a bill for it. Healthcare costs here are on a par with America so she won't save any money. The NHS is for people who have the right to live in Britain, not for health tourists trying to avoid costs at home. Hospitals here now have departments to trace foreign patients and make sure they pay for treatment recieved.
I'm sorry that the old lady needs care and can't get it but if her own country won't provide it she has no right to look here. Elderly people here have paid all their lives to be entitled to NHS care and still have to use up all their own funds before qualifying for state funded care. How dare you even think of stretching resources even further by expecting the taxpayers of this country to make up for deficiencies in the US system.

Surely there must be something they would do for her in America, they wouldnt just put an old lady whos severely ill out on the streets.
Does she not have medical insurance?
I cant see her being eligible for 24 hr care here, even our own elderly aren't,if they have more than 8k they have to pay for it.

I was ill while I was in England. I called my insurance provider to make sure that my insurance would cover my care in the UK and found out that it would.
I tried over and over to give my insurance card to the health care authorities in England so my insurance could pay for my care, but no one would take it. They did not turn me away and they also gave me the medication I needed free (I also offered to pay cash for the drugs to no avail).
Editing my answer now that I read the question again. She did not get ill while in England? You just want to take her there to mooch off their system?

No she is not legible for free medical treatment in the Uk.When we visit the states we have to take out Medical Insurance so have any US citizen coming here.If the lady has close friends or relatives they could perhaps club together and pay the bill for her.

Yes, they can get health care here, but would have to pay, they would not get it free like UK citizens who have paid through mandatory deductions from salaries etc. Hope that she has a good medical insurance to cover her costs until she has been here long enought to claim resident status.

YEs.. but please bring health insurance. Not really fair to the locals who have to pay for that system to operate and you suck up their funds.
Socialized medicine is not free. The residents of those countries get their medical insurance deducted from their income as a tax. It is mandatory, everyone with a job pays into the pot. That is why everyone gets medical care.

Yes but do you think the standard of health care available in the UK is sufficient. I would encourage you to think about countries in the developing world eg Africa, Asia. In fact just about anywhere as the NHS is abysmal. You go in for the simplest procedure & end up dead with MRSA!

If she has no insurance, and limited assets/income, she will be taken care of for free in the United States under her state's Medicaid program.
