side notes: he doesn't get along with his mother at all they just see each other on xmas exchange gifts and not talk for a year.
and i just did his laundry yesterday so he had clean jeans.

You are one lucky girl who has a bf who respects your feelings and emotions. He wore the pants just because you said you like them. Sinc it was given to him by his mother whom he did not like he gave an execuse of not wearing it. Becoz he respects you and does not want to hurt you he wore the pants. if you find a person like this in these time you should be happy and feel lucky. This I feel is building a relationship which will last long and has good bonding. Now you need to reciprocate and make him feel that he is not alone in this world. that warmth will bond it further.

he doesnt get along with his mum - so he passes a bad remark over the present she got him. but actually since he got a new pair of jeans, he will wear it anyway. i think lots of people answer in a similar way esp when they dislike something/one. its a spur of a moment comment.

One of the reasons is that he might want to prove to his mother that he liked what she gave him. He doesn't want to break her heart because she raised him. Also he loves her a lot and really doesn't want to upset her.
Another reason is maybe he wants to make you happy too. Since you liked it, he thought of wearing it and see how it looks on him. He appreciates what he gets and not throw them after getting it.
That's what I think.

Who cares if he likes the jeans after calling them gay, it was prob his pride that would not let him show his true emotions about his jeans. Obviously he likes them...

Thats a perfect example of a guy!! They say they dont like something just to complain. You think he wants to say something his mom got him is fashionable? but as soon as you told him that you liked them he probly thought ok these are hot im going to wear them but i wont let her know i think so!!
