it is the expiration date, but cheese is just off milk any way, so it will be fine. Just keep it until it smells!

Their is a difference between an expiration date and a sell-by-date. Expired means the obvious...sell-by means the store has to sell it by that date. The rule of thumb is when your item reaches a "sell-by-date" it has another week or even week and a half in it to live. :) Expiration means if it reaches that date -- chuck it. On the other hand...how the product has been handled and stored has a lot to do with its expiration too. Just because the company posted that date on the carton does not make it the davine number. lol
Long story short -- YOUR NOSE KNOWS! If it smells edible...go for it...if it smells like socks and/or underwear...toss it!

In my experience, cottage cheese doesn't last for too long after the expiration date.......usually two or three days past expiration. I suggest it would be best to use it asap.

I keep it for three days after opening- although it can last for a week . You can easily tell by the smell when dairy products are off but when you are not sure, its better to keep safe. It is not worth the risk. I wouldn't used anything expired.

if you haven't put a spoon or anything in it, just opened and looked at it you're good for 5 days, must like sour cream, if you've made contact with it, spoon tasting, the outside interaction will start the decomposition and 3 days is your limit, you're now looking at a petri dish
