Man made up religion about as much as he made up morality. (Which is to say he didnt)
Religion is based upon the one true God that created everything including you. Try to disprove him! It has been tried for centuries without success.

I do not see any other reason than power and control. I believe that Jesus came down here to free us from religions. He wanted to teach us to have a personal relationship with God. Religion does not save you, God does.

Two reasons.
1- To try to control the population
2- So that you don't really have to die.
The latter was probably the first and most important reason.
