My interpretation: this means the speaker may be by him(her)self but acknowledges that a spiritual companion is always with him(her). God, the father is the spirit of Love. God, the Holy Ghost, is "truth". If we love each other, believe "The Golden Rule" and have accepted this love/truth into our hearts and lives, then we feel the spirit of love and truth at all times.... even when we are alone.

spot on ... i wrote something about this actually , so let me share ( although it is a little long )
sitting by ourself
such a contradicive term or is it ?
if we are sitting by anything are we not next to them ? with them ? joining them ?
so in a sense when one is lonely and doing a solitary job such as musicians, artists , writers ... even the housewife who stays home to clean and make the house beautiful for her family .. are they ever alone ?
i think the bigger question should be who is sitting with us ?
when we write , compose . paint .... are we not inspired .. if so by whom ?
for the majority of times i feel the other person with us is ourself , our inner self , higher self whichever yu choose to call it .. and personally i cant think of anyone more wonderful to share those quiet moments with
in the more inspirational moments i dont doubt that it is spirit standing by us , giving us hope , insight, ideas, images to use and share with the world
i cant imagine an artists career ends in the physical life and what better way to continue thier work than to pass on their passion to those best fitting to pass that on in this life

Very nice. When we get lonely, we need to remember that God promised that He never leaves us alone.
