Dogs urinate over another dogs spot because they are marking their territory. It's sort of like writing " I was here" on a tree or picnic table. They are leaving their scent for other dogs to learn about them. From the scent they leave behind, other dogs can actually tell the sex and size of the dog leaving the markings. When dogs go for a walk and spend lots of time sniffing, it's like thay are reading the doggie newspaper. The smells tell them who has been in their territory. Also, if you've ever noticed that boy dogs like to urinate as high up as they can. The higher the mark left, the bigger the dog.At least that's in dog language. There is a great book called "Learning to Speak Dog" which answers many questions about why our furry friends behave the way they do. Check it out.

Have you never heard of territorial pissings? Dogs can identify each other by the pheremones present in their urine. If they think it's their tree then they'll just mark right over the top of the previous dog's urine to claim it. Until the next dog comes along to do the same. It would be hard work keeping all those markings up to date. You should watch the Animal Planet sometime.

That's how they mark their territory, by urinating. By sniffing the urine, they know "who" the territory belongs to. When they urinate in the same area, they are claiming that same area. My dog does this a lot in the park. Also, the higher up on an object, such as a tree trunk, the urine is, it corresponds to how big the dog is. It makes sense if you think about it, a yorkie can't get it's leg up as high as a great dane.

All the posters who said that urinating on just about everything outside is for territorial reasons is correct, but there is one other reason: If you walk your dog along the same route everyday, he or she will always be able to find the way home should they ever get lost outside without you.
This is most noticeable if you ever deviate from your normal route. You will notice that your dog will stop and pee a LOT more often. Her doing this might drive you crazy but it's just the dog looking out for #1.

It is a form of letting other dogs know they have been there. They urinate to mark there territory and smell around to get the scent of other dogs.

Dogs do that because they are territoral and they have to see who (dog) has been there and if they urinate in the same place as another dog it is so they can leave their sent to tell the other dogs that is their territory.

to mark their territory, when they pee on the object it make them feel some kind of dominate power over the object, they especially like to do it when they can smell other dogs urine to remark it as there own territory.
