German shepherds shed all year round and daily. The only way to minimise this is to groom them every day if possible. At least once a week give them a really good session too. Here in the UK they are shedding a lot more this year as the weather has been much milder Usually the heaviest sheddings are in the spring and autumn. As he is only a year old then he will also be shedding his puppy fur.
Don't worry it's normal and a price we have to pay for the privilege of owning this beautiful breed.

Shepherds do shed an awful lot. It is often referred to as 'blowing their coat'. If it is a long coat you can expect it to be shedding for quite some time til the coat thins out for the spring. If its a short coat it wont take as long and there wont be as much hair.
The reason it seems like alot is because shepherds have a two-layer coat. The dense under coat and the top coat. it is this dense coat that is being lost.
Make sure you give your dog a good brush twice a day...it helps remove alot of the hair and speed up the shedding process.

For people who don't speak English, can I point out that MOULTING is perfectly normal in the UK. SHED over here is somewhere you put the lawn mower and gardening tools. You can minimise the mess in the house by daily grooming, but it's something that dog owners have to learn to live with.

YES absolutely normal, I have 3 of them one of whom is long haired and white!! what joy! GSD's don't like central heating much so tend to moult all year round, I keep my dining room radiator turned down so that they have somewhere cool to lie, and also I have wood flooring in there and no carpet. You just have to groom thoroughly every day to keep it to the minimum!

Snakes and lizards molt, but German Shephards shed. I think this is a strange time of the year for our dog to shed his summer or winter coat. It is not the time when seasons are changing. Did you change his food recently? Try adding a bit of olive oil to his food 1-2 T daily. If his condition does not improve after a week, call your vet.

I have a Shep mix and her coat is just like a pure bred Shep. She sheds ALOT. You need to brush often.

Yep, they blow their coat HEAVILY, I mean very heavily (Did I mention HEAVILY?) twice a year. This will continue for a few months depending on the dog, the climate, and other things. And even when its not time for the bi-yearly shedding, THEY STILL SHED................................................................... HEAVILY (but not as much as before)

To help reduce this, you can buy a slicker brush and a rake. brush him about twice a day and give frequent baths

I know it sucks, but ya just gotta love him through it. Its not his fault!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!!
