No, but it should definitely be encouraged.
There's enough dictatorship in this world as it is.
I think everyone should be encouraged to be responsible citizens, starting from birth by parents setting a good example.

Compulsory really isn't the right word. Human nature is to do what is convenient. So make it more convenient to recycle and more people will do it. People who recycle should get curbside service instead of having to go to some recycling center across town. A small discount on their service would also be a good motivator. In some cities, people who recycle actually have to pay a surcharge. How wrong is that!

A good idea, but I have a better one.

Rather than produce things cheaply, which don't last very long, why don't governments demand that things have a minimum life expectancy?

That would cut waste and make recycling workable; especially if manufacturers of good had to also be responsible for disposal and recycling of waste.

Yes I do! In my opinion the government and local councils should do far more than they are at present. In some parts of the country there is very little recycling, we have I think wasted a great opportunity by not usibg Glass more than we do, it must be far easier to recycle Glass that plastic bottles etc.

yes, it should be made. Because, recycling is the only way to minimise the wastage and also serves in the best way in using the natural resources in a best possible way.

Let us take the manufacturing of paper....
The main raw material for paper is wood and so a number of trees are felled for this purpose. But when we use the waste papers itself as input (recycling) then the quantum of trees to be felled will definitely decrease and this benefits us and our planet in numerous ways.

In another perspective, there are some materials that are to be disposed safely. For example... plastics (got puzzled), lead (from batteries) etc..,
If these things are used again as raw materials for the same product or the other products then it again benefits us in many ways

Recycling should be a good thing however it is failing miserably because at the moment it is merely a political tool that shows that councils are meeting there targets usually set ineffectually low, we are told that our council will collect cans and bottles but we have to wash them, using more water and energy than we previously used, but because the recycling companies don't have to wash then they appear to be successful, the concept of making anything compulsory is contrary to true democracy, which allows for freedom of choice, what you are considering is Fascism.

yes, and the local councils should do more to help people recycle. My council does not collect plastic or garden waste at the moment but they expect people to take this to a re-use and recycle depot - what about people who don't have transport to get them there? I recycle as much as i can and have a compost bin for degradable waste, as a result I have much less actual rubbish in my bin but pay the same council tax as other people who recycle nothing.

No, did you know that less than 40% of what you throw out to be recycled is actually recycled. Most of it is shipped to 3rd world countries and is burned or left to rot

I think we should all want to recycle. I think that would do more for things than government compulsion. We could all do so much more but we want more information. We need that report from the government

yes but it still falls on the local council to make sure they recycle the stuff. they are good at leaving things behind(bottles and jars left in MY bin and they weren't even mine) or taking the wrong stuff to the tip.(as recently happened and was on the news) but yes we should all recycle as every bit helps.
