When people are hurting it's harder for them to see happiness around them. Example: If my relationship just failed and I am depressed, I am going to have trouble dealing with your "perfect relationship", so I will likely do things to make your relationship seem less perfect. This is a sad reality of human nature.

As the first responder stated, misery loves company. It's easier to deal with heartache and pain with others. So when others are dealing with it already, people tend to force it upon them.

In addition, sometimes people don't mean to necessarily hurt others. It can be a result of their pain manifesting itself poorly, yet not intentionally. They may not realize that they are really hurting you. Don't take it personally. Angry, sad, depressed, etc. people are dealing with tough emotions and the way they treat others will most likely be affected as they struggle to deal with their own pain.

Many people tend currently to give what they get (at least here in the USA presently). So if they give hurt; they probably got hurt. If they get love, than they can give love.

Pain isn't an easy thing to handle. Everyone has a breaking point and when they break other people get hurt.

It's hard to break cycles of abuse I guess, somebody needs to try to do it at some stage but it's probably the hardest thing to keep quiet when others are tormenting, they drag you down to their level if you aren't really alert to what's happening.

They think that if they can hurt someone else they will somehow magically feel less hurt themselves. They think that making someone else miserable will make themselves feel better somehow, but it doesn't work that way.
