I spent months deciding to get a kitten (2-3 months old) and now I can't find one. I miss my dog who died 2 years ago badly but we don't want to be so tied down now that the kids are independent. I finally decided I need a pet and a cat is less needy then a dog. The shelter said there won't be kittens available until June. As sorry as I am about the "teenagers" in the shelter I really want the babyhood of a kitten. Any ideas about locating a kitten in winter?

It's really hard to find kittens in the winter. I really would suggest rethinking getting an older kitty that needs a home. Kittens dont stay that small for long and will soon become a "teenager" before you know it. Why not get an older one now and get a kitten in the spring?

I'm in the UK & once had a cat have kittens during a very cold, snowy December.

I'd recommend contacting other pet rescue centres. Unfortunately, there are normally have plenty of kittens which need homes all year round. They won't necessarily be teenagers as rescue centres are often the recipients of pregnant queens. Find out if they have a waiting list. Maybe you could leave your details & they can contact you if any kittens arrive.

Contact your local vet - many have a notice board with 'Free to a good home' ads.

I can understand why you don't want to miss out on the early stages & think it's great that you've spent so long making sure that this is the right decision for you. If you do have to wait a few more months, it will certainly be worth it.x

If you really have your heart set on a kitten you should be able to find one, although it probably won't be easy.
As you know spring and summer is kitten season...but my neighbors cat just had kittens 2 weeks ago so although rare it does happen.

If you can't find a kitten in the shelter try asking your Vet if he knows of any of his clients who have kittens at this time.

Just on a side note, in a shelter kittens are the first to be adopted while the young adults and older cats sit there day in and day out just waiting for someone to give them a good home.
Sadly that never happens for a great number of those cats and they are put to sleep.

Please consider adopting an older cat, you might be the last chance at life that cat has.
