Does anyone here remember? Also, they used tokens exclusively back then, not metrocards, right? Were there machines where you could get tokens, or did you have to buy them from an employee?

I don't remember there being any token machines and I bought all mine from the token booth. They only got rid of the tokens completely in 2003. Apparently a type of Metrocard had been in existence since 1994 but I had never even seen one until around 2000. I used tokens up until the last day they were accepted.

i believe it was $1 back then. and yes, only tokens -- no metrocards -- that you buy from the booth.
