We need sleep for our body to relieve stress, to grow, and also to balance our bodily chemicals.
Measurements have been taken to prove that there are some chemical changes during sleep deprivation that concludes the fact that our body needs sleep.

it is not known. what i mean is; we know what will happen if one does not get enough sleep and that it is very important to provide the benefits of which others here have spoken. but why you have to be unconscious (or asleep) to allow for these functions is not well understood.
