We had a baby 7 months ago. My wife got a insurance about the same week that she got pregnent but we didn't know she was pregnenet...we went to see a Dr first time after a month of getting a insurance. It appears to be she was pregnenet before she had the insurance because of those stupid mechine which assumes the pregnency in Dr office.
She has precondition on her insurance plan...and the insurance is keep denying all the payments saying its pre-existing. According to her policy complications delivery are not consider as pre-exisiting and she had C-section because she couldn't deliver the baby normally. We sumbimtted that report also and they are still keep denying the payments...we are talking about around $40K total. I make $95K/year so not qualify for charity and she was a student. But I live in east cost and it's exp. here hardly save money....what should we do..we are thinking just ignore the bills..

Do not ignore the bills - if you do, you risk getting sued for the money, or at the very least, your credit going down the drain. Either way, it's going to suck completely.

Call the insurance and ask for the appeals process. You want to know the whole deal from start to finish - including the contact address. Your appeal should be based on fighting the pre-existing condition. First off - if your wife had insurance immediately prior to getting this plan, pre-existing should be waived. Secondly, they can't prove your wife knew she was pregnant before she went to the doctor, and those machines have a degree of error, since it's based on the last menstrual period. That's why calculating the due date is a guesstimate at best. Send a formal appeal in writing - pretty much in the way they tell you to - and see what happens.

If you absolutely have to pay - send 'em $20 a month - you're making payments, so they can't send you to collection.

Your not alone, the same thing happened to my husband and I several years ago. The doctor felt bad for us and charged us way less then normal fee....but it was still a huge amount of money for young kids. My husband did not make much more then minimum wage at that time. So, we just bucked up and vowed to send them what we could every month till it was paid for. It took us over 5 years but we got it done and felt a lot of pride that we did it. Left us with good credit also, because as long as your trying they can't do much about it. I'm sure they would have liked to be paid off sooner, but it was the best we could do and they got it in the end.

did she have insurance 60 days or sooner prior to being covered by the plan she is on now? then there is a law that prohibits making the pregnancy a pre-existing condition. however, if not, your just going to have to pay the bill. see if you can negotiate a discount on the bills, then pay as much as you can (like a hundred dollars a month) if you can get them to avoid garnishments or judgment, do that, otherwise a big chunk of your paycheck is going to go to them. filling for bankruptcy is extremely hard now, and your credit is permanently ruined for the next 10 years if you file. (a garnishment does not look that hot either) and trust me, for 40 grand, the hospital will do whatever they can to collect something. let that something be what you can afford.
oh, and the hospital can send you to collections if it has not already
someone asked this question if they can send your medical bill to collections
