Because back in the day we emphasized the death of the person -- even said the Mass of the Dead. Today the emphasis is on the person's life -- and we use the Mass of the Resurrection. Just a change in how we view things.

If it is a formal funeral, say for a president, you wear black. Things are changing now, and if it is not a formal funeral, those attending the funeral services are free to wear colorful clothing.... in taste.

because black and greys are the most solemn colors and they do not bring attention to you if everyone at the funeral is wearing black, it is not a bright color which will draw attention away from the funeral and more on other people's clothes. Plus it is more respectful than hot pink, orange or chartreuse

Depending on your religion, you may NOT wear black. For example, Hindus wear white while in mourning.
And the color of deepest mourning by medieval European queens was white instead of black.
"The custom of wearing unadorned black clothing for mourning dates back at least to the Roman Empire, when the toga pulla made of dark-colored wool was worn during periods of mourning."

I think we are supposed to wear any subdued color as a matter of respect. Bright colors tend to put off a happy and cheerful ocassion and a funeral is not that ocassion.
