If you have been with your partner for at least 2 years and you are able to prove that you are in a stable relationship (joint bills and bank accounts etc) then you will be able to apply for residency on this basis. I did this with my partner and it wasn't particularly difficult, just a case of filling in the right forms, paying the money and producing the right documents.
If you have been together for less than 2 years it's going to be much harder. You will probably have to try to get in on the points system, and I'm not sure how easy that would be for a chef.

I am going through residency by partnership right now. There is alot of paperwork to get through, but it is reasonably easy. If you and your partner have been living together for 12 months and you can prove it, then you are in. Go to www.immigration.govt.nz. They will have all the information you need. You don't need to be married and it is no longer an atomatic in if you are married. There are fees do get residency. For me (I'm american) $700 for the application and a $300 migrant levy once approved. You will also need a medical ($200) chest x-rays ($100) and blood tests($100). It seems a bit expensive, but well worth it. You can hire someone to help you get everything together, but I found it easy doing it on my own. The immigration website outlines everything quite well. The site also lists all the proffesions they accept to get residency trough work if you would rather go that way. Good Luck!!

I am from UK and moving at end of year to NZ with Kiwi husband. I am going to arrive on a tourist visa and apply once I am there as it is about half the price compared to applying for the visa here. You will need to provide evidence that you have been together for 2 years with bank statements, utility bills etc. But apart from that I have heard it is pretty straight forward

The best way is to check with the NZ High Commission in London. See http://www.immigration.govt.nz as your first port of call, as the answers to many of your questions are probably there.

Go to the website Phil suggested. Its not that easy to get into NZ, as you will see on the website. Good luck.
