Mardi Gras Season started on Little Christmas, which was January 6th. If you are interested in traveling to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, then everything is in high gear from about the Thursday before Mardi Gras Day to Mardi Gras Day (Feb. 20th this year). Everything promptly stops at midnight for the beginning of Lent, a.k.a. Ash Wednesday. Until the following weekend the crowd will be dead.

The parades basically started last weekend and there will be sporadic parades, usually on the weekend, until about two weekends before Mardi Gras. Parades will then be held every night and the activities will grow.

Hope that helps.

I agree with the previous two posters-Carnival season starts on the day of the Ephiphany (sp?) with the Phorty Funny Fellows street car parade, and ends this year on Feb. 20th at midnight exactly. If you have the chance to be on a balcony in the quarter at midnight on Mardi Gras day, do it. It's quite a site to watch the streets empty out when the NOPD rides along on the horses, followed promptly by the clean up crews. The Thursday before is when the big name parades start, for the most part. Krewe of Muses is always a fun one! Happy Carnival!

mardi gras starts 12 days after christmas on January 6 with the cable car parade. the real big parades like rex, endymion, etc. don't happen till the last two weeks of the parade season, with them getting bigger as you get closer to Fat Tuesday on Feb. 20.
Although you get more beads at the suburb parades instead of in the french quarter; plus the french quarter doesn't have parades they throw stuff off the balconies because the streets are too small.
