A proof of concept model is used to evaluate and demonstrate a new idea or design. It may not have the entire functionality that the final product will have, and it most probably would not resemble the final product either. In electronics we have what is known as the breadboard of a circuit, so called because in the early days of electronics a new circuit design was assembled on a breadboard for evaluation. A proof of concept model might be a collection of breadboards along with some commercial laboratory equipment. The next step is a prototype, which would be as close to the final product in form, fit and function as possible. Then you have the first article model, and finally the production model.
