Children today have many agencies to protect their rights. Having worked CPS for five years I totally agree with their mission to savechildren from abuse. However are we going to far? California is considering making spanking a crime. How many of us were spanked and came out ok? Are we now making parenting a crime? I don't think our parents were a that bad. Why are time outs, sitting in a corner, any less abusive?

NC trying to pass a law that says spanking your child in public is a misdemeanor..I was spanked as a kid..shoot if i rolled my eyes the wrong way i was slapped or spanked with a wooden paddle or belt. I am just fine. I was never beaten and i would never beat my son, but time out just dont cut it for him..sit him in the corner and he plays with the carpet fuzz..send him to his room to think bout his actions and he plays or reads a book..if I pop him he knows i am serious and his actions were not acceptable. I think BIG BROTHER want to take control of how and when we raise our children. Guess I'll be in lots of trouble b/c my son will not be a child like so many of today's kids are that are raised with no discipline..

Having had CPS invade my family due to false abuse charges from my husband's ex-wife and severely parenally alienated step-son, I am very much against this California's proposal.

If something like that had been in place when I was being investigated, I'd probably be sitting in jail today - but did nothing but try to be a good step-mom to that kid. It was a custody grab and the result was the caseworker threatened to remove all 5 of my kids (my 2, his 2 and our new baby) from the home, if we didn't comply with mom's wishes.

Since we relinquished them, they have been medically neglected, are dressed in rags, are fed minimal nutrition/high fat meals, no longer participate in sports, church, etc. CPS never followed up to make sure mom did what she was told by them to do.

I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've ever had to spank my kids. If they were spanked it was only because time outs, restrictions and loss of privileges was not getting through to them. I have never spanked in anger - that is child abuse and nothing more than a parental temper tantrum.

Let me start by saying that their are many abused children out there today, And they DO need help of these agencies.

I think our generation (most of them) have totally lost control of their children.

Other parents are having problems with rebellious kids & try doing the right thing by spanking & end up taking it too far.
You have the parents who abuse, and who murder their children.
Society is afraid of what is happening to these children behind closed doors.
I myself have seen ppl being abusive in public to their child & I try not to imagine what that child recieves at home.
I understand the peoples involvment into parental rights in those cases.
I don't spank my child mostly because i have found taking games & toys away work just as well, BUT if I chose to spank his butt or to even smack his mouth for sassing me IT should be my choice to do so. AS LONG as I am doing it in a proper way & not drawing blood or knockin teeth out.

The short answer is "no". Parenting has definitely changed for the worse. Too many adults are looking for the government to guide us. Social pressure drove instincts through previous generations, and adults were held accountable for their actions. Today many adults act as if their behavior is ok unless there's a law addressing their specific situation. So peers attempt to right laws to address too many scenarios, and it's somehow crushing the common sense of the public. There's a huge difference between disciplining your children and abuse, and these new laws are treating them as the same. If people (children and adults) are not held accountable for their actions, they are unable to teach right versus wrong. This all leads to clueless parenting.

As parents they want to be the best. And sadly to say when it comes to another human we have no right to control them.
When a parent spanks, hit,or yells. Is only because they lost control. No different as in a child throwing a fit, when they don't get their way.I'm sure if that child could it back harder then the parents. The parents would think twice before raising their hands to the child. Some parents take their fustration on a child,or someone that won't strike back.\
If you have to hit get a gym back and hit it til,you feel calm. Then deal with your child.
After all you had that child your responsible for your actions.
After all childrens are only little people that feels, and understands
like a grown person.Talking is the best tool to communication, and education.

Short of obvious abuse, The States need to stop legislating how to raise children.

That is part of the problem. The State thinks it knows how to raise our kids better than we do.

Spanking -- a crime?

There are way too many Billy Bad Asses running around who have a disinclination toward discipline.

They need to be whipped into submission.

LMAO!

I have 3. I love them dearly. When spanking becomes illegal, the state better come pick them up because they aren't living here if I don't have the right to discipline them.

My father had a hand so big, he wore a size 13 ring. I love him and respect him. I trust him and that hand. Because the same hand that popped my butt for not doing homework in school was the same hand that patted me on the back when I graduated high school.
