You can scan 3 or 4 pictures at a time.on a flatbed, with a plastic framing thingamajig. My ex-girlfriend's dad scanned like a quabillion years of slides like that and I think he finished sometime before the second coming. No actually he finally finished...;-) [but he had to retire to do it!]

Personally I use a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED with the 50 slide loader. It still takes forever to scan a cartridge of slides at a high resolution but at least a large part of it is automated (old slides, slightly warped, jam the thing). I still have jillions to go.

The coolscan is awesome and comes with software that is really good for removing scratches and the like. However it costs anywhere from $700 to $1100, and the slide loader was like $200 or so. If you have a lot of slides though and want them "done right" then this is a good way to go. I'm sure there are cheaper methods.
