My best friend says that drinking regular pop versus diet pop does not make that much difference, as far as dieting. He said carbonated beverages are bad for your system, because you cannot break down and digest the carbonation. He says, either way their both just as bad for your body. What do you think?

Diet sodas use fake sugars . That is the most dangerous part of drinking soda.
As for the fizz (carbonation) of course that is not a problem. Why on earth would he think it is? However, mixing mentos with any pop is supposedly blow your gut out, or is that story an urban legend.

On a DIET standpoint, you get ZERO calories from diet soda. The carbonation is just gas, so the only side effect would be some farts and stuff. The only thing bad about it is the acids in the sodas. They can't be good for your stomach lining. But you will lose weight drinking diet. Stay away from the sugar ones.

Plus: Water is always your best bet.

Carbonated drinks contain dissolved carbonic acid under pressure. Once the bottles or tins are open carbonic acid becomes water and carbon di oxide as carbonic acid is unstable at atmospheric pressure. So the gas comes out and is belched or farted. It`s the sugar and caffeine in sodas that may harm but not much.

Consuming carbonated beverages can also lead to a potentially embarrassing side effect; the gasses released by the process can build to the point where it escapes in a belch. (wiki)

yes it is bad for you..plus when you start talking about colas they actually pull calcium out of your bones. the phosphorus in the soda causes this. so a lot of soda can result in bone problems over time if no calcium supplements are taken
