People may say that photograph is more realistic because photos are taken based on real life situations, so it's like taking picture of something that you see. So it has to be realistic.
But paintings can be realistic too. Some artists paint based on what they see. Like bringing their art stuffs to a place, like example on top of a hill, and they will start painting based on what they are looking at. They paint them exactly, thus it's not made up.
Overall, both painting and photograph are realistic in their own ways.

Well, you can't really tell, because you can make a photograph like a paiting now at Sam's Club, or if you're an artist. My sister's a painter, and I'm a photographer, I like both a lot, but sometimes either or are used to shokc people, so if someones does that, then they're not an artist.

that depends on how much the artist have manipulated the scene in his image. the medium used in creating does not matter at all.

a photographer could use photoshop to clone some unwanted parts of the photo, a painter could easily draw another pavilion in the mountain.

but let's say if the image wasn't manipulated, a photo would be more realistic. you could even print it out as a backdrop, and you stand write infront of it, and take a picture, nobody would have known that was just a backdrop.

A photo nearly is the real thing, whose image it is! So, when you say realistic, it is a good painting which is realistic! The painter's imagination and conceptual talent, adds to the realisic beauty and worth!

Photographs are more likely to be more realistic. But both can be used as creative medium.
