XP is not compatible with MS-DOS anymore. It has a command prompt but it doesn't run independently.

Better don"t try to start in MSDOS.
If some programs do not run ,
select the program/Properties
Select compatibility
with other Windows versions.
If you have genuine XP CD then
( In case OS crashes !!!)1.
Try this.
Make a crash recovery disk ( floppy or cd)
for windows98 ( if you have the OS).
2. IN BIOS First BOOT from floppy drive or cd rom.
3. C:/ may appear .
4. Download UltimateBootCd ( a crash
recovery disk containing DOS etc )and try.
