It is a misperception that one cannot see when one's eyes are closed. The eyeballs are made the way that they keep looking all life long. We get the perception of blankness or darkness when we close our eyes because the eye lids being mostly opaque block the light rays to enter in our eyes.

You however are always able to identify if there is light or darkness around even when your eyes are closed. and if a very bright light (like the wave of a nuclear explosion) is thrown at your eyes you will be able to see things even accross your opaque eyelids.

I am an ex nurse and why do you suppose you cannot see, well I'll tell you, it is because in order for your brain to go to sleep or shut down, it must have no distractions, so the lids block out the light, the lids are also there, complete with eyelashes, to protect your eyes from dust and damage.
I would have thought that anyone with half a brain could work that one out, i know my 5 year old grandson can

At the top of the eye, there are eyelids which come over the eye & cover the eye, enabling you to sleep, or protect the eye from bits of dust. It also gives the eye a chance to rest.

Okay this is really stupid but here is the sceintific answer...
your eyelids create a sort of , umbrella and they shade so to speak your eyes so they dont get damaged. But now if you close them completely, you eye lids are now like a big wall.and you cant see through walls so therefore you cant see with your eyes closed!
