Going to Cairns in Oz for a wedding in October. Can anyone suggest the best way to use around 21 days - to see some other contries (not just airports!!). And the best travel firm / package / ticket to use - we are unfortunately 30 years to late to get Student discount and too young for pensioners discount!!

Fleixible air tickets are a wee bit dearer but let you amend flight dates relatively easily. Book earlier for a cheaper fare and shop around

Depending on which airline you fly with your will have a choice of stopovers - Air New Zealand means you could visit Singapore on the way to OZ and Auckland and LA on your return for a few days each place. BA and Quantas means a stop in Bangkok there and Hong Kong on the way back. Fly Emirates and you could stay in Dubai. Malaysian Airlines means a stopover in Kuala Lumur and Penang. Air Canada and you could visit Hawaii and Toronto

You need to go see a travel agent (Trailfinders or Flight Centre etc) to see what you options are for the dates you want to go and what your budget allows.

Ya lucky cuss...
You might try looking into a cruise...Celebrity Cruises was just advertising their new Australia and New Zealand itineraries--one of which is a 14 day transitional cruise between Hawaii and Aus, I think. Not sure on the details. We just did a Europe-Caribbean transitional cruise with them that was just INCREDIBLE (it being our first cruise, though, we really can't compare them to other lines).

I've been seeing some good deals on Asia airfare over the last week or two, but most of that is good for travel booked this spring, I believe. Airfare to Aus and NZ is relatively cheap Jun - early Sep, but that's because it's winter there for them. I'm pretty sure October is out of that cheap airfare window.

While I was in Japan, I could get some stupid good deals through local travel agencies there--my favorite was No. 1 Travel (http://www.no1-travel.com/). I haven't tried using them since coming back stateside, but they do have an overseas departure desk with English operators, so if Japan's on the list of potential stops, you might look there too.

21 days isn't long enough to see the world, I don't think, but Asia and the Pacific are INCREDIBLE..you'll have PLENTY to do.

Good luck, and have fun!

You don't say where your are from so am assuming from the Norther Hemisphere. 21 days will only really allow you to see one other country properly if you want allow time to fly and recover from jet lag. I'd visit a country within a day's flight of Oz. Pretty much everybody rates South East Asia so pick a country there that takes your fancy. I can't recommend a country as I haven't visited South East Asia. Have a word with your travel agent as a lot of airlines these days will allow a stopover in another country for no extra charge (typically for three days).
