Simple. They expected to find a religion of terrorists, and instead discovered a peaceful religion that offers a sound moral standard, beautiful ritual, a well-defined path toward piety before God, and a theology free of complexity or ambiguity.

(No, I am not a Muslim - I am one of the people who studied Islam after the incident.)

Hmm...You asked a straight question so I'll try and give you a straight answer.

Before 9/11 Islam was not a great issue in the West. There had been incidents of Islamic terrorism before, but they weren't that major. After 9/11 people got a lot more interested in Islam, whether negatively or positively. Islam was negatively portrayed by Western media, which put the stress on jihad and terrorism.

The Muslim media hit back hard, portraying Islam as a religion of peace. If you look around you, you'll find that Muslims are actually heard quite well these days. Preachers/scholars like Harun Yahya, Amr Khalid, and Zakir naik, popular video clips from Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam and Sammy Youssef, Islamic talk shows on radio and telivision, and what must be thousands of Islamic sites on the web.

Either way, people's interest in Islam increased. So just as the number of people critical of Islam increased (as in many more Westerners have a negative view of Islam than before, violence against Muslims up 1600% since 9/11 in the US and 700% in Britain since 7/7, etc.), the number of converts increased as well.

Be careful what you read, though, Muslim media will use this to say people are 'discovering the truth.' Also be careful what you read because Muslim sources are known to exaggerate the number of Muslims or converts. For example, you say the Council of American Islamic Relations, which is run by Muslims, puts the number of converts at 20,000 a year, but some Islamic sites put that number at 100-130,000 a year, saying "A recent poll in the US shows..." I've seen that stated several times but have never seen a link to the original poll. I've seen estimates of 50 or 70 million Muslims in Europe and then that figure turned out to be 15 million.

If what you say is proven to be scientifically right, then we may dare say that some human beings, especially some of the lower levels of intelligence, are often one-sidedly bluntly morbidly attracted by the very dramatic sensational destructive events.

For those people a naive and short-sighted leaning towards a world behind that which motivated such hellish destructive events, a morbid wish to become a part of it, may be a way to fancily drifting away from their actually dull sense of life. No?

Many people didn't even know about Islam then.

When they heard some people lying about Islam, saying its violent, that Islam is the reason, many people decided to find out whether its true or not. Apart from finding out that that was wrong information, they got to know about Islam and its benefits, so many people did convert.

But there still are some who believe in the lies first spread about Islam.

Two reasons spring to mind 1) A faith that someone is really willing to die for and offers complete certainty may seem attractive to some people. 2) With the fall of Communisn Islam is the only serious opponent of world capitalism.

I'm not sure that statement is at all accurate. I think it is more accurate to say that more attention is paid to Islam in the news since 9/11, and sadly much of it is negative.

In largely Islamic countries, outrage against American imperialism and aggression may well be fueling more interest in Islam and more fanatacism as well.

They wanted to study Islam to know if there is really a religion that encourages violence??

But when they discover that it doesn't, and only people who want to give a false imprission about Islam are doing all the violence, and this religion is all about love and peace, they converted.

And NO thats not a lie. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_converts_to_Islam

They may see the truth in the Quran and they are blessed for that. People who accept Islam for reasons other than that will know their own punishment or reward.

I don't think there is any correlation between the growth of Islam and 9/11...if anything it has turned more people away from that religion.

I haven't and I wouldn't. And I don't imagine the people that were victims of the 9/11 attacks have converted.
