I am going to Spain, for a holiday in the summer and i would like a list of new clothes to take, you know the capsule wardrobe thing?? i will be doing a mix of shopping, beach/pool, bars etc. basically i want to be one of those people who only take a little suitcase but always look great and have an outfit for everything. i searched on google but only found things like "take a swimming costume that can double for a top in the evening", which i really don't want to do, obviously. Any suggestions...?

I live in Spain and as you will be aware, it is usually very very hot in August. I would take cotton clothing whenever possible. As far as what type of clothes, shorts, obviously is a must as well as the more obvious items of swimwear. Three quarter shorts would be good for the evenings. Lots of tops which you can mix and match. Don't forget the sarong, great for covering the shoulders on the beach, when the sun is burning. Also maybe a little cotton sundress. Almost any item of clothing will be acceptable wherever you go. Hope you have a great holiday.

Some nice cotton bright summer dresses to go over your swim wear in the day, will do nicely for popping off shopping in too and going for lunch. Wear with a casual beach bag and flip flops. Then buy some funky accessories to wear with the dresses in the evening. Dress them up with a nice handbag and some heels. I also personally love halter necks and strapless tops, they look lovely in the day and I think they look really smart for going out in. Wear in day with a sarong and at night with maybe a long floaty skirt.

Also some 3/4 lenght shorts (providing these suit you) for in day with cotton tops, and smarten them up with a smarter top at and strappy sandles for night.

Take a couple of things especially for evening too - eg can't go wrong with a black dress (can be a more casual cotton style if its not dressy where you are going). You can wear this two nights with different accessories and hair style. Could buy a bright broach for example to pin on for a different look.

Don't forget though to take some washing powder and travel iron - you don't want to be wearing a sweaty suncream filled clothes out in the evening!

Have a great time, it sounds lovely, wish I were there now!

The general rule is 'take half the clothes and twice the money'.
I think you can get away with just one pair of black trousers and one black skirt and you can get away with anything.

Everything is causal in Spain. No one really dresses up, even for a meal in a restaurant. Just take a selection of tops, a couple of swimsuits and bikinis and you're set.

You won't need anything heavy in Spain in August.
