Why would this happen, i would of assumed a real silver chain is better than the metal ones you buy from the petshops?

Humm... I'll fess up, my dogs wear beads (on elastic) and the one with silver beads doesn't have that problem but the other beads probably hold the silver ones off her neck. could you try adding beads at inervals to hold the sliver off her neck?

The jewelry is becoming tarnished and your dog's fur is "polishing" the necklace. Sterling silver jewelry becomes tarnished in the open air. When a person wears this jewelry the oils from their skin help slow the tarnishing process. Stainless steel jewelry may be an option for your dogs because it will not corrode.

I've got a few nice silver chains that I wear and, like a lot of people, I've got gold ones as well although they seem a bit passe.
My dogs wear leather collars that are usually wet and covered in mud from their walks. The collars come up nicely with old-fashioned saddle soap.
The dogs' white fur on their necks is often grey or mud coloured before they dry off and get a good grooming.
Doesn't bother them; doesn't bother me.

Silver tarnishes naturally when exposed to air. This tarnish will turn silver gray or black after a while. Since it is actively worn on your pug, it rubs off on his fur. There isn't much you can do to prevent this if you always keep it on him. If you only let him wear it on special occasions, then polished it before you put it on him, then the tarnish wouldn't come off.

As another answerer said, silver oxidises and tarnishes. It is this tarnishing that is rubbing off on your dog's coat.
As a different answerer said, use a stainless steel or chrome coated chain, these will not leave any marks on your dog's fur.
This is why most dog leads and metal collars are made of stainless steel.
Hope this helps.

Re check the purity of your chain..I know I,ve bought earrings before and one was silver the other B.s metel that was plated. Some ripoffs will change the clasp and pass off bogus jewelry too.. Watch your P's and Q's as they say in the South...

Do you remember your Grandmothers best silver she had so neatly put away in a beautiful wood box?
Did you ever see her polish it?
Real silver will tarnish. I seem to remember that in the Jewish faith, they do not revere family genealogies inscribed on silver or brass. I believe it was as far back as King Solomon that he would order a family convicted of some wrong doing to record on silver and out and out bad boys to do the like on brass.
Hence the saying, " You have tarnished the family name. "
Stick to the Pet store brand or get your baby gold.

Silver tarnishes. You'd need to seal it first with a lacquer coating or something similar.
Why don't you try gold necklaces on them?

IF YOU WANT YOUR DOGS TO WEAR A SILVER NECKLACE THEN GO AHEAD AND DON'T LET OTHERS BAD MOUTH YOU FOR IT.
I THINK YOU SHOULD PUT A COAT OF VARNISH OR CLEAR NAIL VARNISH ON THEM (THE NECKLACE NOT THE DOGS LOL) TO STOP THE NECKLACE ACTUALLY TOUCHING THE FUR N CAUSING A REACTION.
GOOD LUCK AND I BET YOUR BABY'S LOOK REALLY CUTE :o)

Could be poor quality or fake silver.
Could be silver reacting with the natural oils in the dogs fur.
The collars they make for dogs are stainless steel. STAINLESS steel. They call it that for a reason. It's stainless.
