I have never heard that before but, if you want to buy him something special just because you love him then do so. I don't think it is customary for you to have to buy something for him though. Congratulations on your engagement and may you have a very happy marriage.

I've never heard of that. Wedding gifts to each other are customary but the engagement jewelry is an old custom by which the male "claims" the woman. Women only accepted jewelry from family so to accept anything from a male would signify she was getting married. There was no tradition of reciprocation that I know of.
Ask your fiance where he heard this. Maybe he just wants to feel special too. Its not such a hard thing to buy him cuff links or a money clip to show you care about him too!

Different countries and social groups have different customs, but the most popular one is that the man offers the wedding band as a pledge and show of love, the woman has only to accept or refuse this - no gift is required.
In other cultures the marriage proposal is not even done in front of the woman but is made from the man to her father. He has to convince the father that he can and will provide for his daughter, and this often done through him giving the father gifts - not the other way around.
PS - Congratulations!

I've heard of the engaged woman to buy her fiance a watch. I didn't do this, since I had bought him a really nice watch just a couple months earlier. It's kind of a nice touch, though, to give a gift in return.

Why not? Dont worry about custom and tradition. Do you want to get him a present? Yes - then do, No - then don't! Simple.
Me and my partner are gettin married in May. Engaged in August 2006 and I felt bad that he spent all this money on me and I didnt get him anything so I got him something!
Do what you want to do (and that goes for wedding preparation too) Too much weight gets put on custom and tradition!!!

My boyfriend wanted to wear a ring as well, so I got him a titanium ring which he is wearing on his wedding ring finger. It's not a rule that you have to get something, some people do and some don't, don't feel pressured into doing what other people do.

I have been hearing about this for a few years now. Rule of thumb is if it feels right and you want to , do. Did he actually ask you for a present? Was it a friend who pointed it out?? I am confused.

In old times it has only been the woman to get one but nowadays most people think its only right to get him something to. I got mu hubby a chain which he always wears. You dint have to spend a lot its just a sign you are committed to him to.
