America is the furthest thing possible from a Christian anything!
Time for you fundamentalists to get off this opinion chat line, watch some world news, then go poke your heads back in the sand.

I doubt very much that it would happen. America never has nor ever will endorse any specific religion. We are thiest-that is to say that there is a general belief in a supreme being, but it is not locked into any particular faith. One of our first treaties, following the invasion of Tripoli by the Marines discusses how the United States is not a Christain nation and has never harmed Islam and in fact, permits the free worship of Islam in its borders. The treaty was signed during the tenure of Thomas Jefferson. It also gave a means for the United States and an Islamic country to resolve their differences peacefully, the matter would be referred to the Bey of Algeria for a final decision. Through out our history, one religious group or another has tried to dominate the national arena and most have failed. They get their moment in the sun and that is about it. That is why we have the checks and balances in place. To keep any one group from getting so powerful that they can control the government and people. This is also part of the reason behind the Separation of Powers Clause in the Constitution. No matter how bad a fundementalist movement might want to control the government, the Courts and Congress would stop it. If it is the Congress being controlled, then the Executive branch would stop it. I believe that if this were to go to a theocracy, there would be widespread rebellion and the government might have to deal with a revolt within the military, as well as the several million veterans that wouldn't stand for such an abuse.

Of course not. What have you been reading?
America is officially a fascist nation, and it is on the verge of becoming a police state. But a theocracy? No. Those Christians who support the government do so blindly - if they knew what decisions were being made with their endorsement, they would immediatley resist. The powers that be may have the support of a Chrisitan minority, but their actions have nothing whatsoever to do with any form of Christianity. I watched a campaign video for the last election where George Bush announced to a large body of pro-life Evangelicals that he would NOT attempt to overturn R v. W. Without skipping a beat, the entire audience gave him a standing ovation. I showed a preacher a video of George Bush swearing and flipping the bird, but the preacher just looked out into space and said, "That's not George Bush." I explained to a Republican relative that the government was planting agents in Churches before the election to monitor possible political endorsements - he replied, "Where did you read that? The Internet?" I told my own relatives (Republicans, Christians) about an Associated Press article revealing that FOX News was running propaganda pieces written and filmed by the Pentagon. They just laughed.
The point is, we are not heading toward a theocracy. The Religiou Right is just as powerless as anyone else - they just refuse to look at the facts, and blindly support the government. George Bush has made no attempt to present himself as a born again Christian - in fact, he is not. But listen to a Christian radio station and they will think that he is.

Not on the verge, but definately fundamentalism is on the upswing as it has been a number of times in our brief history. It is true that even though the precepts of Jefferson were theistic, not Christian, Americans are still tortured by the APE, the American Puritan Ethic.

If we don't get out there and start voting, and be more critical in our choices, and examine more closely the kind of people we elect to the school boards and local representation, it WILL happen.

Maybe you should move to Iran, no theocracy there. Otherwise vote. You are beating a dead horse, i think this forum is a gauge of how much freedom we all have and will continue to have.
