the Duration of the presciption varies according to the drug being prescibed and the illness it is being described for. Usually this information is clearly indicated on the label placed on the pill bottle or whatever else has been prescribed to you.
For long-term prescriptions, the standard duration 1 one year thus insuring that the patient has to return to the doctor within that time-frame. Depending on the illness and doctor though, some will only give prescriptions for 3,4 or 6 months because they want/need to keep track of their patient's progress.

Depending on what it is, it is usually on the lower left side of the prescription bottle, where the number of refills allowed will be posted. If it says zero, then you have to call the doctor to get another refill.
Narcotics and addicting pain killers can only be refilled one or two times.
