Some very good answers here. Yes, Thai silk is a very good item to bring back although on the more "expensive" side of things.

Please be careful bringing back items made of untreated wood (eg carvings) or animal product. Quarantine and customs laws may mean you will lose them at the border entry or be fined or both.

Go shopping - have a look . There are so many things you can buy. Get something that will be uniquely Thai or - as peanutz said - something that will remind you of your stay there. But before you buy - think about whether it will be allowed into Australia and if the item would be too fragile to be packed into your bag.

A bit of forethought will save you money, bad memory and/or disappoinment later.

You get the usual t-shirts and handicraft souvenirs in Phuket. Things like elephants will be plentiful too. Look for something that will remind you of your stay there. I think this will make a more meaningful buy.

you can definitely find very good deals on handicrafts and various Buddhist art items. while technically it is illegal to export statues of Buddha, other figures such as Deities can be brought back home with no worries about the customs agent finding it in your luggage.

there is probably a quality market there that might be open only on weekends so check ahead for the schedule and go prepared to bargain with the merchants. it can be quite fun actually.

Many of my friends that have travelled to Thailand brought many beautiful jewelery back. Mostly silver and unique, exotic patterns.

When I went to Thailand, I bought a nice doll that was dressed in their ceremonial garb, and a large hand-painted fan that I hung on my wall. Also, their gold was less expensive. Be careful if you are taking children with you. I took my daughter who was around 5. Everyone, and I mean everyone, wanted to touch her blond hair and to hold her. It got to be too much at times.

I bought my son a real cobra snakeskin belt and he thought it was way cool. They also had taxidermy snakes but were too large for me to carry back.
