We are thinking of being married in Scotland or Ireland. Where do we get the license, etc. Will this marriage be recognized as legal in the United States? (where we are from)

yes.. your marriage will be recognized in USA. You need an official "translator" and register the document at The Foreign Office at England and External Affairs at USA, to prove the document is valid and legal.

I think since you are already a US citizen you have to get the license here (and probably have to have a civil ceremony here) and the marriage in Europe would only be ceremonial. I looked into this a bit when I was thinking about getting married on a cruise and was told that the US only recognized marriages of citizens held in very specific locations. Ask your travel agent...I'm sure they handle Europe weddings quite often.

Wherever you get married, you need to have a marriage licence from that state. The marriage itself will be perfectly legal though and recognised as such by the US athorities!

We're from the UK and got married in the US and had to comply with all the legislation etc there, so I guess its the same for you coming over here. Our marriage is recognised in UK as well as US so I guess that would be the same for you too.
