You can try this online website called Postcode anywhere, which has a bank details validator. You can check which bank a sort code belong to by just entering the sort code and searching. See source for the website.

Years ago, when the Big Four were the Big Four, sorting code numbers starting 20 were Barclays, 30 were Lloyds, 40 were Midland (now HSBC) and 60 were NatWest, I think 10 were Coutts. Now that banks have taken over building societies and there have been various amalgamations, one sees sorting codes starting with 0 and this rule is not so easy to apply to them. If you contact your bank, they should have a reference book listing all the sorting codes and the banks to which they belong.

Try BACS website. (Banks Automated Clearing System) I used to work for a finance company and we used to have a BACS book with all of the bank sort codes and their addresses.

Good Luck!
