It is called the terrible twos..most toddlers go through it. It is a device to get your attention, do not give your attention. If it bother's you, invest in a child gate, put it in the doorway of his room and when he begins his tantrums put him in his room. Be prepared because once he realizes that isn't getting him what he wants he will quit...then he will try something else. My daughter banged her head, threw herself onto the ground so hard she would actually bounce, she bit herself till she bruised and she held her breath...I ignored each and every phase and finally she discontinued that behavior.

I'd say the first time he banged his head on the floor out of pure frustration he got such a response from you that he decided he'd use that one again. At 2 your son in frustrated with what he wants to do & what is physically capable of because he can't keep up with his own mind. A 2 year old knows no other way of venting unmanagable emotions such as frustration & anger so he becomes physical. I'd say try & ignore the head banging & reward him for vocalising or managing his anger in other ways - ways that you could possible show him. Just remember to try & always stay cool, calm & collected.

My son is 18 months old and bangs his head against anything that is near when he gets mad. I have been told it is just a part of growing up. I also have a 8 year old who NEVER did any of this. So who knows...
I have noticed that ignoring the act will make him do it less and less. Now my son has moved on to throwing things. So hopefully this to will pass.
Good luck

as well as the terrible two, this could also be caused by major stress from the enviroment. If you have loud sounds, music, screeming, yell or anything else in the house stop it. Then try to explain to him that he isn't allow to hit himself, it isn't right. Encourage him by getting him interested in a hero, or if he already has one build off it. Say that his hero needed his head to be undamaged for the things he needs to do in everyday life. As well try to spend more time with him... As long as you set up a stable enviroment this shouldn't or won't happen (again)

My son hits himself in the head because he thinks it's funny.

My littlle brother also used to be a head-banger and would bang his head against the wall.

It is just a faze. You should just be consistent in telling him that that behavior is not apppropriate and he will eventually get the picture and grow out of it.

my neice use to do this as well when she was between 1-2 yrs. old. we thought it was a temper tantrum too. however turned out she was suffering from ear infection and didn't know how to tell her parents cuz she wasn't talkin great then. she went to the dr. got ear drops and was recommended to get tubes placed in her ears. since the ear drops took care of the painful infections her parents opted not to get tubes placed in her ears she quit beating her head on the coffee table after that.. she is 13 now and still has constant ear aches .her mom had constant ear aches in her childhood. dr. said it was inheriated.

Lord yes, My grandaughter did same thing. First time I see it, I tripped out-never saw another child do so. Hers was a result of being totally mad and throwing a PROFESSIONAL temper tantrum, lol!
We found best thing to do was to ignore her, act as is everything was normal, that she wasn't trying to knock a hole in the floor, and she eventually quit doing so. She's graduated to telling others she not love them whenever she gets mad.
Kids do the craziest things.

It might be the terrible 2's but if you are really worried take him to the doctors and see what advice they give you about your son.
Good luck with this one
