Are they purely to hang earrings from or do they offer a use that I dont know about regarding hearing?

Or did Our Maker have a spare bit of skin that he just plonked onto the bottom of our ear!

I think that since they are part of our external ears that are mainly used for collecting sounds from a wide range around us .. then they certainly aid in hearing .... i assume that they give a kind of fixation to the cartilagenous(hard) part to prevent excessive vibration by every sound ...

That's a very good question - and one that I don't have the answer to!

However, when I was a kid I used to hold my ear lobe whilst sucking my thumb, very comforting lol.

They seem to be for decoration only. Our maker hid all the left-over bits in our trousers.

Don't they engorge when we are sexually aroused making them a subtle signal to the opposite sex?
