My 13 year old son has the most dry skin ever. Ever since winter came around I felt that his entire body is almost like sand paper.
I always see him itch it and everything. I went to a dermontologist and she said he just needs to be using lotion every day on his body after he takes his shower/bath.

I just got a new Nivea Dry skin lotion, which is very thick for him. I told him he needs to apply it every day after his shower. I come in after and I apply it on his back where he cant reach.

I found out he is not even using the lotion, the bottle is still full, but his back is doing better, from when I do it, I told him many times, but he never uses it. This is what I did so far.

-I showed him pictures of people with bad bad dry skin.

-I told him that girls hate guys who have dry skin-

-I asked him if he wants to pick his own lotion from the store.

And then one day, I caught him squrting the lotion in the toilet.. Please tell me what I should do!

This doesn't sound like a dry skin problem so much as a control issue. When children - especially pre-teens and teens - don't feel they have much say in what happens to them, or what they can or cannot do, they'll use other issues to take control. The more you push the issue the harder they push back.

Try making a deal with your son. Tell him he can stay up half an hour later each night, or watch some TV program you've not allowed him to view, IF he can be responsible for his own skin and apply the lotion as directed. This way whether he gets to do something he wants is up to him. If he fails to accept the deal, or welshes on it, don't yell or nag but simply remind him - ONCE - that his new privilege depends upon his cooperation. If he still won't do it, then take away the privilege until he does. In the meantime don't nag or yell or punish him about the dry skin thing because, after all, it is HIS SKIN and as long as the condition isn't putting his overall health in jeopardy, I see no reason to hog-tie the child and slather him down with lotion.

I wouldn't make a big deal of it. He'll get tired of his own dry skin after a while. Spend the money on some nice body cream for YOURSELF. Wait until he asks for some lotion. When he notices you don't act like you care any more, he'll change his mind. My son is now 20 and as tough as they come. But he uses baby lotion and baby gel religiously because the girls tell him they love how he smells. Once your son is interested in girls, his grooming habits will do a 180 degree turn.

My husband will only use Suave Oatmeal because he says everything else smells too girly & he likes the smooth texture. Maybe leave some of that in the bathroom closet and don't mention it to your son.

My nephew has very bad eczema. My sis has been fighting with him for years to lotion up.He's 17 now.About the only time he does it willingly is when it starts cracking or bleeding. Unfortunately, he's a teenager, and they have some very thick heads at that age.Just stay on him.Check him to make sure if you're that worried about it.You can tell if someone just put lotion on or not.She laughs about being his warden, but it's better than the alternative. It can be very painful when your skin starts cracking, and can get infected too.

Well, I would say this.........I have told you several times to use lotion and you are not doing what you were told to do. Don't make me as your parent hold you down and put the lotion on you myself. I mean that is ridiculous. My daughter's skin used to be the same way and I told her to put lotion on after every time she got out of the shower. She did and now she doesn't have to use it like she did before. You are the parent. Make him hold still and put the lotion on him. Maybe if you treat him like a baby since he is acting like one, he won't want to be embarassed like that again and he will do it on his own. It's not his option any longer. I wouldn't even give him the lotion. It's too expensive to be squirting down the toilet. When he wants to act mature, he can be given the lotion privileges back, until then, put it on him. Easy!!!

He may be embarrassed of his skin, or he might feel like lotion is for girls. Maybe it would be better if you just gave him the lotion, told him that the lotion will help him, but you are not going to remind him or push him anymore and if he doesn't want to use it that's fine, but just don't waste it. Eventually he will start using it on his own.

If the dry skin bothered him that much than he would use the lotion. Sounds like he's not that concerned about it. Provide him the lotion and then allow him to make the decision about whether or not to use it.

When he takes his shower, come in afterward and stand there and watch him put it on. At his age, having you there at that point will likely embarrass him, so he may start complying, after a while because it will get you out of his hair and he'll start to realize that he feels better and itches less with the lotion. Of course, he may need to have that lesson reinforced with a comment (Hey, have you noticed that you aren't itchy?) but he'll eventually get it.

I'd also dock his allowance for lying to you and wasting the expensive lotion, but I'm hardnosed like that.

i had some dry skin when i was younger and the stuff i had was always really greasy maybe that's what bothers him, also some soaps and laundry detergent set if off for me, did you switch to something new about that time? maybe the doctor could recommend some other type of meds for it pills or what ever, or you could try bribing him with a few extra bucks allowance if he does put it on or something but that could end up biting ya later on.
