Coming to Canada isnt what may cause you some confusion...going home is another story. :)
If you are flying, effective January 23, 2007 you need a passport to "enter or re-enter" the USA.
By land and sea you need a piece of ID showing citizenship (original birth certificate is most common) and one piece of government issued photo ID. (generally, drivers license) These are the same things you need to get into Canada too.
Enjoy your trip!

Right now there's about a 2 month open window for flying. I acutally heard a story yesterday from a friend of mine from Huston. On the plane from Huston to Calgary, this other lady was able to board without a driver's license, passport OR birth certificate. No identifiaction at all. Why? Because in canada, they'll let you in. But you won't be able to get back to the US without proper identification. How strange is that?? Now, I have no idea if she actually made it into canada or if she made it back to the US. Moral of the story, carry a passport. It'll make ur trip sooo much smoother.

If your flying into Canada, then yes, you'll need a passport. Make sure its still valid and hasnt expired. If your driving, then you wont need a passport.

By air, yes to get back into the States. The law for land and water based re-entry to the US doesn't go into effect until 2008 I think.

I just heard a news report on this and if I am not mistaken you will need a passport if you are flying. If you are driving you don't need one.

Only if you are flying, however it is much easier to cross the boarders with one. If you don't have one you need your birth certificate and photo ID, such as your drivers licence.
